This course offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills. In fact, it is for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing our on-the-water National Powerboat and Advanced Powerboat levels, and Introductory and Competent Crew sailing courses.
Aim: The aim of Irish Sailing’s Coastal Navigation course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely navigate a boat by day and by night in coastal waters with which they are familiar.
This is a highly informative course with lots of opportunities for you to put your newfound knowledge into practice. We use demonstration and practical exercises to help reinforce the information you’ve learned. There is a strong focus on passage planning and rules of the road.

How long is the course? 1 full day and 2 evenings
Prerequisites: Some previous sailing or boating experience is expected.
Assessment: Participants who demonstrate an understanding of the principles taught during the course, followed by a short theory-based exam paper, will receive their Irish Sailing certificate.
